In the heart of Santiago de los Caballeros stands one of the Dominican Republic’s most storied public spaces — Duarte Park. Named after Juan Pablo Duarte, the founding father of the Dominican Republic, this historic plaza has been the civic and social soul of Santiago since 1884. Shaded by mature tropical trees, surrounded by the Cathedral Santiago Apóstol and City Hall, and anchored by a prominent statue of Duarte himself, this is where Santiago comes to sit, breathe, and connect with its own history. It is free, open daily, and one of the most authentic experiences you can have in the city.

The history of Duarte Park
Duarte Park has served as Santiago’s “plaza de armas” — its principal public square — since the colonial era. Originally the site where military reviews were held and civic life unfolded, it evolved over the 19th century into the city’s primary gathering space for residents. The park was officially inaugurated in its current form in 1884, honoring Juan Pablo Duarte, who led the movement for Dominican independence from Haiti in 1844.
The statue of Duarte at the center of the park is one of the most recognized civic monuments in Santiago — a focal point for national celebrations, quiet afternoon visits and the kind of unhurried daily life that defines the Dominican Republic’s second city. Under the shade of the park’s mature tropical trees, you’ll find locals from every walk of Santiago life: retirees on benches, students studying, families passing through, and vendors selling drinks and snacks on the perimeter.

Juan Pablo Duarte — who was he?
The park’s namesake, Juan Pablo Duarte (1813–1876), is one of the three founding fathers of the Dominican Republic — known as the “Trinitarios” alongside Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and Matías Ramón Mella. Born in Santo Domingo, Duarte founded the secret society La Trinitaria in 1838, which organized and led the peaceful declaration of Dominican independence on February 27, 1844 — separating the country from Haitian rule after 22 years of occupation.
Duarte’s legacy is woven throughout Dominican public life — his image appears on the 200-peso banknote, the country’s main highway (Autopista Duarte) carries his name, and dozens of parks, schools and streets across the country honor him. In Santiago, Duarte Park is the most visible daily reminder of the founding generation that shaped the Dominican Republic.
