Santiago de los Caballeros got its most ambitious public space in 2018 when Santiago Central Park opened — a modern, large-scale urban park that has rapidly become the city’s most active outdoor venue. Unlike the intimate, tree-shaded Parque Duarte a short walk away, Santiago Central Park is designed for scale — wide open plazas, modern landscaping, fountains, and enough space to host the massive crowds that descend every February for the Carnaval de Santiago, now the park’s biggest annual event. Free, open daily, and increasingly the heartbeat of modern Santiago.

The home of Santiago Carnival
Since 2025, Santiago Central Park has served as the official main stage of the Carnaval de Santiago — one of the most authentic and celebrated carnival traditions in the Caribbean. Every Sunday in February, and on the grand finale on March 1, the park transforms completely: stages are set up, the iconic Lechones take over the space, comparsas perform, and tens of thousands of people pack the plaza in an atmosphere unlike anything else in the Dominican Republic.
The move to Santiago Central Park from the old Avenida Las Carreras route has significantly improved the carnival experience — better viewing areas, improved crowd management, live streaming infrastructure and a more organized layout. For first-time carnival visitors, the park is now the best place to experience the full spectacle.

What makes Parque Central different from Parque Duarte?
Santiago has two major parks — and they serve completely different purposes:
- Parque Duarte (1884): Historic, intimate, shaded by old trees, surrounded by the cathedral and city hall. Best for quiet morning visits, people-watching, and absorbing 140 years of Santiago history. No major events.
- Parque Central (2018): Modern, open, designed for large gatherings and events. The city’s main outdoor stage. Best for weekend evenings, concerts, and carnival. Busiest in February.
Both are free, both are within the city center, and both are worth visiting — but for different reasons and at different times.
Getting to Parque Central from Hotel Platino
- By Uber: 10–15 minutes · approximately RD$200–350 from Hotel Platino
- By car: 10–15 minutes · parking available near the park
- Carnival Sundays: Expect heavy traffic and road closures around the park — plan to arrive by Uber and add extra time
- Combined visit: Pair with Parque Duarte, the Cathedral and Mercado Modelo for a full city center day
