Santiago de los Caballeros sits just 90 minutes from Puerto Plata — one of the Dominican Republic’s most beautiful coastal cities. That proximity makes Puerto Plata the perfect day trip from Santiago: you can be swimming in the Caribbean Sea, sliding down the 27 Charcos de Damajagua, riding the mountain cable car, or exploring Fort San Felipe all before sunset — and be back in Santiago in time for dinner.
This guide covers everything you need to plan the perfect Puerto Plata day trip — what to do, how to get there, when to go, and how to fit it all in one day.
Top things to do in Puerto Plata on a day trip
The Dominican Republic’s most thrilling natural experience — a series of 27 natural waterfalls and turquoise pools carved into the limestone mountains west of Puerto Plata. You hike up through the river, then slide, jump, and swim your way down through 12 or 27 of the falls (guides go with every group). This is the single best thing to do on a Puerto Plata day trip — but it books out fast. Reserve online in advance at 27charcos.com. Wear water shoes and bring a change of clothes.
A cable car ride to the peak of Pico Isabel de Torres — 793 meters above sea level with breathtaking panoramic views of Puerto Plata, the Atlantic coast, and the northern mountain range. The peak is covered in cloud forest and has a botanical garden and a massive Cristo Redentor statue. One of the best viewpoints in the country. Check operating hours before going — sometimes closed for maintenance.
Puerto Plata’s north coast has several excellent beaches. Playa Dorada is the main resort beach — calm waters, beach chairs, facilities. Sosúa Beach (about 20 min east) is a beautiful cove with calm, clear water and good snorkeling. Playa Cofresi is quieter and more local. All are easily accessible by car or Uber.
Ocean World is a marine park with dolphin swims, shark encounters, stingray experiences, a water park, and a casino. Great for families with children. Note: it can take up most of your day, so plan this as your primary activity if you choose it. Book in advance online.
The oldest military fort in the Americas, dating to 1577. Small museum inside, with exhibits on the colonial history of Puerto Plata and the fort’s role in the region. Located at the port on the Malecon — easy to combine with a walk along the seafront.

How to get from Santiago to Puerto Plata
Option 1 — Rental car (best for flexibility)
Renting a car gives you complete freedom — stop at the 27 Charcos, explore different beaches, and return on your own schedule. The Santiago → Puerto Plata route via the Autopista Duarte takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes in normal traffic. Rental agencies are available at Cibao International Airport (STI) and in the city center. Budget around $40–70 USD/day for a standard vehicle.
Option 2 — Private transfer
The most comfortable and stress-free option. A private driver picks you up from Hotel Platino, takes you to Puerto Plata, waits or returns at an agreed time, and brings you back. Great for groups and families. Ask Hotel Platino’s front desk to arrange this — we can recommend trusted local drivers and provide current pricing.
Option 3 — Caribe Tours bus
Caribe Tours runs comfortable, air-conditioned buses between Santiago and Puerto Plata several times daily. Departs from the Caribe Tours terminal in Santiago. Journey takes approximately 2 hours. Very affordable (around RD$250–350 each way). Good option if you’re not renting a car, though it limits your flexibility for day trip activities.
Option 4 — Uber/taxi to the highway, then local taxi
Uber doesn’t run the full Santiago–Puerto Plata route but you can take Uber to the Caribe Tours terminal. Note: once in Puerto Plata, local taxis and motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) are the main options for getting around between beaches and attractions.
The perfect Puerto Plata day trip itinerary
Early start — beat the traffic and arrive in Puerto Plata before the heat peaks.
Start early — the waterfalls get crowded by mid-morning. The hike and descent takes 2–3 hours. Wear water shoes, bring a change of clothes and a towel.
Head into Puerto Plata for a fresh seafood lunch. The Malecon (seafront) has several good options with ocean views.
An afternoon ride gives cooler temperatures and clearer views. Allow 1.5 hours including the cable car + walking the summit.
End the afternoon with 1.5–2 hours at a beach. Playa Dorada is closest; Sosúa has better snorkeling.
Leave by 5:30 PM at the latest to arrive back in Santiago before dark and avoid Sunday evening traffic.
